Dame Evelyn Glennie. 2015 calendar.

I’m excited to share some of the images from a photo shoot earlier this year with world renowned virtuoso solo percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie. You must head over to her site to read her story, it’s humbling and very inspiring. There is a video on her site about the calendar and an interview too about how and why she wanted to produce one.

“Within every page of the calendar you will find a brief story about the instrument displayed and what it means to me.    This is the result of a very intimate processes, one that I am now sharing with you. A little journey within my life’s journey.”

The planning of the shoot actually started in November 2013 with some initial emails and calls. As a world class musician, Evelyn has worked with lots of different photographers over the course of her career. She was looking for something a bit different and more creative for a calendar to celebrate her 50th birthday.

I did a test shoot and sent over the results and a quote/ proposal. As part of this, I also designed a logo just to put on the test images. They really liked it and ended up using it in the calendar and all the associated marketing materials!

I didn’t hear anything for the next couple of weeks so, as you can imagine, was thinking “oh well”…then I got a ‘phone call from her PA explaining that Evelyn travels a lot and hadn’t had chance to review all the quotes and test shots that had been sent in. I should expect to hear something in the next few days…more nerves!

I got a call the following day saying that Evelyn really liked the images I had sent and she wanted to meet up to discuss things further. Wow! I was made up!

I went down to meet Evelyn, and her PA Brenda, in Cambridge and we had a great meeting discussing their ideas and aims for the project and I had the opportunity to explain my vision for how the calendar could look. I came away feeling that I had done my best, we got on well and she liked the images and my ideas…but there were still other photographers for her to see so it was back to waiting.

You can imagine how delighted I was to get an email saying that Evelyn liked my ideas and vision for the project and felt that I understood what they were aiming to achieve and wanted to go ahead!

We booked the dates for the shoot and I continued to plan with her team in the intervening weeks. The day for the shoot arrived and I drove down with the car full of stuff. I arrived about 6 pm and we shot all the instruments that would feature in the calendar. This went very well and we managed to complete all these shots in a couple of hours.

After a night in a local hotel, which was gorgeous, I headed back to the studio to complete some shots of Evelyn playing. We then made our way to Evelyn’s home studio to complete the final phase of the shoot and to get the cover image.

I already had the design of the calendar ready for the images, so after some editing in PS, I sent over the first draft. After some revisions we were ready to send to print. This was completed by Hollinger Print and handled from initial quote through to final delivery by the very patient Adam, thanks Adam!

The finished calendars were delivered a few weeks ago and I received a great email saying that they had arrived and Evelyn was happy with the final result!

“To celebrate this momentous year, Evelyn is making her unique instrument collection available for you to cherish with 13 beautiful, specially commissioned images in one calendar”

Evelyn, and her team, were an absolute pleasure to work with on this project. I’m delighted to have been part of it and to have produced the images and design that will both celebrate and commemorate her remarkable achievements and career so far.

Here are a couple of images from the calendar and you can find more info by heading over to Evelyn’s website.
