Last weekend, I was in London working for Attitude Men’s Hair salon and Mod Salon as they were on stage at the annual Salon International Show. The show takes place over 3 days with day 1 being open to the trade and industry. There were stands from some of the biggest names including Tigi, Wahl, Denman and Balmain. I had been asked to cover the event from a documentary point of view which was perfect for me as I could shoot it exactly as I wanted without any list of must have shots or anything specific to deliver to the client.

It was an early start as we left Liverpool at 445am and headed down to London. We arrived a little late after a fairly big diversion half way there, but were still in time for Ian ans Izaak to get their models, Chris and Alex, ready. We made our way into the Excel Arena after a bit of hanging around for my pass, but it was quickly sorted. As soon as we got there I began to shoot some images to try to tell the story of the day. Ian and Izaak were due to appear on the Hair Dressers International stand at 1030am as the first invited barbers to demonstrate their skills and current trends in men’s barbering.

I had prepared a short video showcasing their which was played just before they came on stage. Initially, the crowd was very small but thankfully, as soon as the music started it filled up pretty quickly and there was a good number of people watching and learning. As they were working, they were interviewed by Matt from HJI about their work and both Ian and Izaak did a superb job explaining what they were doing as well as what was going on in their respective businesses. After 25mins, the models’ finished styles were presented to the audience and there was some spontaneous applause (quite rare apparently) and lots of the watching crowd came forward to take some photographs.

For the photographers, all images were shot with the Fuji XT1/56mm 1.2  and XPro1/23mm 1.4. They were processed in Lightrrom 5 and edited with VSCO, Red Leaf Fernweh presets and tweaks in Alien Skin Exposure 6.
